Foil-lined Corrugated Box

Foil-lined corrugated boxes combine a kraft outer carton with a reflective aluminum liner. Use them when you need stack strength plus a radiant barrier for chilled food, seafood, samples or short-haul cold chain — without jumping to EPS foam.

Frequently Asked Questions About Foil-Lined Corrugated Boxes

What is a foil-lined corrugated box?

A kraft or white corrugated carton with aluminum foil laminated to the inner face. The board gives stacking strength; the foil acts as a radiant barrier and a moisture-facing liner for short-haul cold chain, frozen food and damp packs.

Is foil-lined the same as an EPS foam cooler?

No. EPS is bulk insulation. Foil-lined board is a carton plus a reflective liner. It ships flatter, prints better and is easier to handle as paper packaging. Hold time depends on ice packs, box size and ambient temperature — do not treat it as a drop-in 48–72 hour EPS replacement unless you have pack-out test data.

How does the foil help?

It reflects radiant heat and slows moisture wicking into the paper. Combined with the air in the flutes, it reduces heat gain versus a plain kraft box. It is not a vacuum panel and it is not waterproof at the scores unless the liner is continuous and the joints are sealed.

Single-wall or double-wall?

Food mailers and retail frozen packs: E, B or C flute single-wall, often with a white print face.

Meat boxes, seafood and heavier ice-pack loads: BC or similar double-wall. Specify wall grade by packed weight and stack height, not by “foil” alone.

Is the liner food-contact safe?

Only if you specify a food-grade foil laminate and any inner film. Ask for the declaration that matches the market (FDA, EU 10/2011 or equivalent). Standard industrial foil board is not automatically food-contact certified.

Is it waterproof?

The foil face resists splash and short standing water better than raw kraft. Scores, glue joints and raw edges can still leak. For wet protein or meltwater, use a continuous liner, taped joints, or a PE bag inside. Do not store filled boxes in standing water.

Can I print the outside?

Yes. White-lined outer face takes flexo or digital print well. Heavy foil on the outside is usually not the print face. Typical add-ons: 1–4 colour flexo, die-cut handle, lock bottom, tuck lid.

Does foil make the box stronger?

Slightly more puncture resistance on the lined face. Edge crush and BCT still come from flute, paper weights and box style. Quote ECT / burst the same way you would for unlined board.

Can it replace a wooden crate or heavy DW shipper?

No. Use it for temperature and moisture control in a carton, not for machinery or high rack loads. For industrial stack strength see double-wall or triple-wall sheets.

What should I put on the PO?

Style (RSC, wrap-around, lock-bottom mailer), inner L × W × H, wall/flute, foil on inner only or both faces, food-grade yes/no, print, ice-pack allowance, target transit time, quantity and Incoterms.

How should boxes be stored?

Flat or knocked-down, dry, off the floor, 30–70% RH. Foil faces can scuff; keep stacks even. Ex-mill moisture is typically similar to other corrugated (about 7–9%).

Are they recyclable?

The paper fraction is recyclable where foil-laminated board is accepted. Many mills reject heavy foil or mixed foil-film. Tell the customer to check local paper-stream rules; do not claim “curbside recyclable everywhere.”

What is a typical use case?

Frozen dumpling or boba kits, meat subscription boxes, seafood samples, chocolate in warm lanes, and short parcel cold chain with gel packs. For multi-day frozen pharma, spec a tested insulated system, not foil board alone.
